The population of Birmingham Alabama in 2005 was approximately 234571 people. Of the offenses known to law enforcement officers in 2005, 3449 were violent crimes and 18923 were property crimes. Violent crimes in 2005 included 104 cases of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, 241 cases of forcible rape, 1429
cases of robbery and 1675 cases of aggravated assault. Property crimes in 2005 included 4933 cases of burglary, 11962 cases of larceny or theft and 2028 cases of
motor vehicle theft.
