The population of Newport News Virginia in 2005 was approximately 184538 people. Of the offenses known to law enforcement officers in 2005, 1439 were violent crimes and 8216 were property crimes. Violent crimes in 2005 included 20 cases of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, 103 cases of forcible rape, 542
cases of robbery and 774 cases of aggravated assault. Property crimes in 2005 included 1470 cases of burglary, 5887 cases of larceny or theft and 859 cases of
motor vehicle theft.
